Image is Everything

Have you ever sold your house? Or at least watched one of those cable television shows about people who do? There’s always a “before they get help” view, and an “after the help” view, right? The home owners are always pushed toward change and improvement, because it makes selling the house easier.

Everyone knows the rules for selling a house, right? It’s about presentation. Make it pretty and attractive so buyers will be able to imagine themselves living there. Just ask Jennifer Sullivan from Keller-Williams Realty and she’ll tell you the same thing. If it’s not attractive, who would want to buy it?

I think many of the same principles used in the real estate market to sell homes can also be used to improve your own business - to sell your products and services rather than homes [unless of course homes ARE your products and services!]. So let’s take a brief moment to explore some of the ways you can do this in your business.

Curb Appeal

If you’ve ever gone house shopping, you know how important that first walk from the car to the front door really is. You form most of your impressions before you even enter the home. Is it clean and landscaped? Is it attractive? Has the house been cared for?

As a business owner, it is important that you make sure your potential customers and clients don’t turn around and run before they get in the door. Whether you have a brick-and-mortar location, or your business lives on the internet, there are changes you can make to create curb appeal, which will attract more business and represent the quality of your work.

Have professional marketing material created for you. No more black and white photocopies, ok? No more clip-art heavy flyers created in your word processing program. If you think your business offers a valuable service, present it that way. Give your products and services the polish they deserve. A glossy brochure, a color flyer, or an eye-catching postcard go a long way to creating curb appeal for a business.

Position Yourself

Selling a house involves getting it into the right price-point and positioning it well with similar homes for sale in your area. And like it or not, you have competition in your field. Whatever you do - legal services, construction, or accounting - you need to make sure you have a chance. That’s all you’re hoping for, really, isn’t it? A chance. A chance to share your quality and passion and professionalism with other people.

So why would you settle for not having a logo? Or business cards? Or a brochure about your business? People need something to see - a visual aid or a memorable image - and when you don’t have those things, they forget you. Don’t be forgotten!

You’ve heard it before, I’m sure, but Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” How many shots are you missing because you aren’t taking them? Get in the game. Create a professional website, or brochure, or flyer, and get yourself positioned in your market. The right way.

Remodeling

Sometimes getting ready to sell your house involves a bit more of an investment. The big trend these last few years is to remodel the kitchen or the bath or the outdoor living areas. You can seriously increase the value of your home by remodeling these key areas.

Talk to a designer about your brand. What? You don’t think you have a brand? Sure you do. It’s a combination of your company name, your logo, and your “image”, all wrapped up in a visual style. Does your logo use a gorgeous shade of green? Use that green elsewhere. Does your logo have an eye-catching shape or object in it? Repeat it on other things people will see. Remodel your marketing and identity materials, and it will pay off.

Don’t have a logo? Think you can get by without one? You’re wrong. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but logos make you memorable, and if you are not memorable, you are forgettable. Working with a professional design firm like Wet Frog Studios will equip you with a logo and brand that will make you stand out from the rest of your field. It’s an investment, for sure, but the returns on that investment will speak for themselves.
